Return on Investment
Return on Investment (ROI) measures the profitability of an investment as a percentage:
ROI = ((Final Value - Initial Investment) / Initial Investment) × 100
Profit or Loss is the simple difference:
Profit/Loss = Final Value - Initial Investment
For example, if you invested $10,000 and it grew to $15,000:
- Profit = $15,000 - $10,000 = $5,000
- ROI = ($5,000 / $10,000) × 100 = 50%
A negative ROI means a loss:
- Invested $10,000, now worth $8,000
- Loss = -$2,000
- ROI = -20%
Things to consider:
- ROI does not account for the time period — a 50% return over 10 years is very different from 50% in 1 year
- For time-adjusted returns, use annualized ROI:
((Final/Initial)^(1/years) - 1) × 100 - Consider fees, taxes, and inflation for a more accurate picture of real returns
