Net Overtime Earnings

Overtime pay is appealing on paper — typically 1.5× your normal rate (time-and-a-half) or even 2× (double time). But the actual take-home value of overtime hours is often significantly less than people expect, once taxes and other deductions are accounted for.

How Overtime Pay Works

In most countries, standard overtime rules apply to non-exempt workers:

  • US (FLSA): 1.5× base rate for hours worked over 40 per week
  • UK: No statutory overtime rate, but typically 1.25×–1.5× by employer policy
  • EU: Varies by country, typically 1.25×–2×
  • Canada: 1.5× after 8 hours/day or 44 hours/week (varies by province)

The Tax Trap

Overtime earnings are taxed as ordinary income. The key issue is that overtime may push you into a higher marginal tax bracket for those additional dollars. Even if it does not change your bracket, the effective tax rate on overtime hours (including employer deductions) is typically 28–40% for middle-income earners.

True Hourly Value Formula

True Value = (Overtime Hours × Overtime Rate) × (1 − Effective Tax Rate)

This gives you the real dollars you take home for each hour of overtime worked.

Hidden Costs of Overtime

Beyond taxes, consider additional costs:

  • Commuting extra hours (if driving)
  • Childcare costs for additional work hours
  • Meal costs at work
  • Physical and mental health — overwork reduces productivity and can lead to burnout

Is It Worth It?

For most middle-income earners, after-tax overtime value is approximately 90–110% of their normal net hourly rate (due to time-and-a-half gross, offset by higher marginal taxes). Whether overtime is “worth it” depends on your financial goals, family situation, and how much you value your non-work time.
