Equivalent Hourly Rate

Converting Annual Salary to Hourly Rate

When comparing a salaried position to hourly work — or evaluating a freelance rate — you need to know the true equivalent hourly value of your annual income.

The Basic Formula

Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours Per Week × Weeks Per Year)

For a standard full-time job in most countries:

Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ 2,080

This uses 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 working hours per year.

Standard Working Hours by Country

Country Hours/Week Weeks/Year Total Hours
USA / Canada 40 52 2,080
UK 37.5 52 1,950
Germany 38 52 1,976
France 35 52 1,820
Australia 38 52 1,976

The “Quick Rule” for Americans

A simple trick: divide your annual salary by 2,000 to get a close approximation.

  • $50,000/year ÷ 2,000 = $25/hour
  • $75,000/year ÷ 2,000 = $37.50/hour
  • $100,000/year ÷ 2,000 = $50/hour

Why This Matters

Salaried employees often work more than 40 hours without extra pay. If you work 50 hours per week on a $60,000 salary, your true hourly rate drops from $28.85 to just $23.08 — a 20% reduction in effective pay.

This calculation is also essential for freelancers setting rates. Remember to add 25–30% to cover self-employment taxes, benefits, and unpaid time between projects.

Practical Example

A $72,000 annual salary at 40 hours/week:

  • $72,000 ÷ 2,080 = $34.62 per hour

That same salary at 50 hours/week:

  • $72,000 ÷ 2,600 = $27.69 per hour
