Income Comparison

Service workers often earn more from tips than from their base wage. This calculator lets you compare your tip income against an equivalent hourly raise — useful for:

  • Deciding whether to take a job with tips vs. a higher base salary
  • Negotiating wages with your employer
  • Understanding your true effective hourly rate

How the calculation works:

Effective Hourly Rate = Base Wage + (Weekly Tips ÷ Weekly Hours)

Annual Tip Income = Weekly Tips × 52

Equivalent Hourly Raise = Weekly Tips ÷ Weekly Hours

Example:

  • Base wage: $12.00/hour
  • Weekly hours: 30
  • Weekly tips: $300
  • Tip-per-hour equivalent: $300 ÷ 30 = $10.00/hour
  • Effective hourly rate: $12.00 + $10.00 = $22.00/hour
  • Annual tip income: $300 × 52 = $15,600/year

Tax considerations: Tips are taxable income in the United States and most other countries.

  • You must report all cash and card tips to the IRS
  • Employers must report tips on your W-2 if they exceed $20/month
  • Tips affect Social Security and Medicare contributions
  • Some states have additional tip reporting requirements

When tips beat a raise: Tips are variable — they depend on how busy the restaurant is, the day of week, and how well you perform. A guaranteed hourly raise provides more income stability. However, in a busy restaurant or bar, experienced servers often earn far more per hour than they could get from a raise alone.

Industry tip averages (United States):

  • Fine dining: 18–22% of check average
  • Casual dining: 15–18%
  • Coffee shops: 10–15%
  • Delivery drivers: $3–5 per delivery
  • Bartenders: $1–2 per drink or 15–20% of tab
  • Hotel staff: $1–5 per service interaction
