Jigsaw Puzzle Table Size Calculator
Calculate the table size needed to assemble a jigsaw puzzle.
Enter piece count and aspect ratio to get assembled dimensions and a working area buffer.
Standard jigsaw pieces are roughly 0.75 inch (19 mm) on a side, give or take a few mm depending on manufacturer. So the assembled puzzle dimensions follow directly from the piece count and the aspect ratio of the printed image.
The math:
aspect = width / height (e.g. 4:3 = 1.333) pieces_h = sqrt(total / aspect) pieces_w = pieces_h x aspect width_in = pieces_w x piece_size height_in = pieces_h x piece_size
Common aspect ratios on retail puzzles:
- 4:3 (most 500 to 1000 piece puzzles)
- 3:2 (Ravensburger 1500+)
- 2:1 panoramic (1000 piece long format)
- 1:1 square (specialty)
Standard puzzle dimensions you can expect:
- 500 pieces, 4:3: about 18 x 14 inches (45 x 36 cm)
- 1000 pieces, 4:3: about 27 x 20 inches (68 x 50 cm)
- 1500 pieces, 3:2: about 32 x 22 inches (81 x 56 cm)
- 2000 pieces: about 38 x 27 inches (97 x 68 cm)
- 5000 pieces: about 60 x 38 inches (153 x 97 cm)
Now the table itself. You need more than just the assembled size:
- Add 12 inches (30 cm) on every side for sorting trays and unsorted piece piles
- Add 6 inches (15 cm) at the top for an image reference
- Allow elbow room for at least one person on each long side
For a 1000 piece puzzle, a 36 x 36 inch (90 x 90 cm) card table works but feels cramped. A standard 60 x 30 dining table is comfortable. For 2000+ pieces a folding 6-foot banquet table or a dedicated puzzle board becomes essential.
Tip: a roll-up felt mat or puzzle board lets you slide the partial puzzle out of the way for meals — worth it if you only have a dining table to work on.
