Compatibility calculators have been popular entertainment since at least the 1970s in Japan (“FLAMES” game) and in teen magazines worldwide. They generate a score based on names, dates, or personality answers — often using simple mathematical tricks.

The FLAMES Algorithm (Classic) FLAMES = Friends, Love, Affection, Marriage, Enemies, Siblings. Algorithm: cross out matching letters in both names; count remaining letters; count down cyclically through FLAMES. This playground game spread across Asia, Europe, and the Americas through teen culture.
