How Bingo Works Bingo uses 75 numbered balls (in the American version) divided into five groups by letter: B (1-15), I (16-30), N (31-45), G (46-60), O (61-75). A caller draws balls randomly and announces them (e.g., “B-7”, “N-34”). Players mark matching numbers on their cards.
Bingo Card Layout Each card is a 5x5 grid. Column B contains 5 random numbers from 1-15, column I from 16-30, column N from 31-45 (with a free space in the center), column G from 46-60, and column O from 61-75. No two cards are identical — there are approximately 552 septillion possible unique Bingo cards.
Winning Patterns Classic Bingo: complete a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line (5 numbers). Four Corners: mark all four corner squares. Blackout/Coverall: mark every number on the card. Letter patterns (T, L, X, etc.) are used in many variations.
History Modern Bingo evolved from a 16th-century Italian lottery game called “Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia.” It was popularized in the United States in 1929 by Edwin S. Lowe, a toy salesman from New York, who trademarked the name “Bingo.” By 1934, there were an estimated 10,000 Bingo games per week across the United States.
