D&D 5e Core Character Statistics
Every D&D 5th Edition character is defined by six ability scores (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, Charisma), each ranging from 3 to 20 for most adventurers.
Ability Modifier The modifier is derived from the score using: Modifier = floor((Score − 10) / 2). A score of 10 or 11 gives +0, while 18 gives +4. The modifier is what you actually add to dice rolls.
Proficiency Bonus This bonus applies to attack rolls, saving throws, and skill checks where you are proficient. It scales with total character level:
- Levels 1–4: +2
- Levels 5–8: +3
- Levels 9–12: +4
- Levels 13–16: +5
- Levels 17–20: +6
Attack Bonus For weapon attacks: Attack Bonus = Ability Modifier + Proficiency Bonus. Melee attacks typically use Strength, ranged attacks use Dexterity. Finesse weapons (rapier, dagger) can use either.
Spell Save DC Spellcasters use this formula: Spell Save DC = 8 + Ability Modifier + Proficiency Bonus. The relevant modifier depends on class — Intelligence for Wizards, Wisdom for Clerics/Druids, Charisma for Sorcerers/Warlocks/Bards.
Passive Perception Passive Perception = 10 + Wisdom Modifier (+ Proficiency Bonus if proficient in Perception). The DM uses this secretly when you might notice something without actively searching.
Hit Points At 1st level: HP = Maximum hit die value + Constitution modifier. Each subsequent level adds Average hit die value (rounded up) + Constitution modifier. Hit dice by class: d6 (Wizard/Sorcerer), d8 (Cleric/Druid/Bard/Rogue/Warlock/Monk), d10 (Fighter/Paladin/Ranger), d12 (Barbarian).
Initiative Initiative = Dexterity Modifier. This determines turn order in combat when rolled at the start of an encounter.
