D&D Hit Points Calculator
Calculate your D&D 5e total hit points by class, level, and Constitution modifier.
Uses official 5e average hit die rules for levels 2 and beyond.
How Hit Points Are Calculated in D&D 5e
At level 1, you always take the maximum value of your class’s Hit Die. At every level after that, you either roll your Hit Die or take the average (rounded up).
Most players (and most online play) use the fixed average because it is reliable and fair.
Formula (Using Fixed Average)
HP = Max Hit Die + (Average Per Level + CON Modifier) × (Level − 1)
Hit Die by Class
| Hit Die | Classes | Max | Average |
|---|---|---|---|
| d12 | Barbarian | 12 | 7 |
| d10 | Fighter, Paladin, Ranger | 10 | 6 |
| d8 | Bard, Cleric, Druid, Monk, Rogue, Warlock | 8 | 5 |
| d6 | Sorcerer, Wizard, Artificer | 6 | 4 |
The average is the die’s midpoint rounded up: d12→7, d10→6, d8→5, d6→4.
Constitution Modifier
Your CON modifier is added to every level’s HP gain. A CON modifier of +3 gives +3 HP at level 1 and +3 HP at every subsequent level — it compounds significantly over 20 levels.
Example
A level 10 Paladin (d10) with CON modifier +2: HP = 10 + (6 + 2) × 9 = 10 + 72 = 82 HP.
