What Is Initiative?
At the start of combat, every creature rolls a d20 and adds their initiative bonus. The results are ranked from highest to lowest — this is called the Initiative Order. You act on your turn each round, in that order.
Formula
Initiative Bonus = Dexterity Modifier + Any Additional Bonuses
Common Sources of Initiative Bonuses
| Feature / Feat | Bonus | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Alert Feat | +5 | Feat available at any level |
| Bard: Jack of All Trades | +half PB | Bard level 2 (half proficiency bonus) |
| Barbarian: Feral Instinct | Advantage | Barbarian level 7 |
| Rogue: Inquisitive | +WIS mod | Inquisitive subclass level 3 |
| Order of Scribes Wizard | +WIS mod | Wizard subclass feature |
Advantage on Initiative
Some features grant advantage on initiative — meaning you roll two d20s and take the higher result. This is mathematically equivalent to about a +3–4 bonus on average.
Tiebreakers
If two creatures roll the same initiative, the DM decides the order. Common tiebreaker methods:
- Higher DEX modifier goes first
- Players go before monsters on ties
- Roll again to determine order
Why Initiative Matters
Acting before enemies can be the difference between life and death. A Rogue with high initiative can use Sneak Attack and potentially eliminate a threat before they act. A Wizard who goes first can cast Hold Person and incapacitate enemies for the whole party.
