Mulch Depth Calculator
Calculate the recommended mulch depth and volume needed based on plant type, bed area, and mulch material.
Mulch Recommendation
Mulch depth varies by plant type and mulch material. Too little mulch is ineffective; too much can harm plants.
Recommended depths by application:
| Application | Depth (inches) | Depth (cm) |
|---|---|---|
| Annual flower beds | 1–2 in | 2.5–5 cm |
| Perennial beds | 2–3 in | 5–8 cm |
| Shrubs and trees | 3–4 in | 8–10 cm |
| Vegetable gardens | 2–3 in | 5–8 cm |
| Pathways / walkways | 3–4 in | 8–10 cm |
| Weed suppression only | 4–6 in | 10–15 cm |
Volume formula:
Volume (cubic yards) = (Length × Width × Depth in inches) / 324
Volume (cubic meters) = Length(m) × Width(m) × Depth(m)
Important tips:
- Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from plant stems and tree trunks (“mulch volcanoes” cause rot).
- Organic mulches (bark, wood chips, straw) decompose and improve soil over time.
- Inorganic mulches (gravel, rubber) last longer but do not enrich soil.
- Refresh organic mulch annually as it decomposes.
- 1 cubic yard covers about 162 sq ft at 2 inches deep, or 108 sq ft at 3 inches deep.
