Calculate the total weight of a vertical garden system including planters, soil, plants, and water — for wall and fence mounting decisions.
Total Weight Estimate
Why Vertical Garden Weight Matters
Vertical gardens can be surprisingly heavy.
A wall-mounted system that looks lightweight can easily weigh 50–150 kg (110–330 lb) once loaded with wet soil and plants.
Knowing the total weight is essential for choosing the right mounting hardware and ensuring your wall or fence can support the load.
Weight Components
Component
Typical Weight
Felt / fabric planter panel
0.5–1.5 kg per m²
Plastic modular planter (empty)
0.3–0.8 kg per pocket
Potting mix (dry)
450–600 kg per m³
Potting mix (wet / saturated)
700–900 kg per m³
Mature herbs (per plant)
0.1–0.3 kg
Mature leafy greens (per plant)
0.15–0.4 kg
Mature flowering plants (per plant)
0.2–0.5 kg
Drip irrigation system (per m²)
0.5–2 kg
Soil Volume per Pocket
Pocket Size
Soil Volume
Small (herb pocket, ~0.5L)
0.4–0.6 L
Medium (standard pocket, ~1.5L)
1.0–2.0 L
Large (deep pocket, ~3L)
2.5–3.5 L
Wall Support Guidelines
Wall Type
Load Capacity
Standard drywall (between studs)
Only for frames — not direct load
Drywall into stud
40–70 kg per properly anchored bracket
Concrete / masonry
100–200 kg per anchor bolt
Fence (timber, 10 cm post)
30–60 kg total per section
Steel frame / welded structure
200+ kg
Safety Margin
Always design for at least 2× the calculated load as your minimum bracket/anchor rating.
A wet soil system that weighs 40 kg should be mounted with anchors rated for at least 80 kg.
