Antibiotic Course Completion Calculator
Calculate how many days remain in your antibiotic course and track doses to ensure you complete the full prescription.
Completing a full antibiotic course is one of the most important things you can do for your health and for public health overall. When you stop taking antibiotics early — even if you feel better — the surviving bacteria may not be fully eliminated. Those remaining bacteria can multiply and potentially develop resistance to that antibiotic, making future infections harder to treat.
This calculator helps you track your antibiotic course by showing how many doses and days you have left, and what percentage of the course you have completed. It also estimates the date you will finish.
How the Calculation Works
The formula is straightforward:
- Total doses = doses per day × total days
- Doses taken = doses per day × days already taken
- Doses remaining = total doses − doses taken
- Days remaining = doses remaining ÷ doses per day
- Completion % = (doses taken ÷ total doses) × 100
Common Antibiotic Courses
Most antibiotic prescriptions run 5 to 14 days:
- 3–5 days: UTI treatments (e.g., nitrofurantoin, trimethoprim)
- 7 days: Strep throat, ear infections, many common infections
- 10–14 days: More complex infections, Lyme disease, pneumonia
- Long-term (months): Acne treatment with low-dose antibiotics
Dosing Schedules
- Once daily (1×/day): Take at the same time each day
- Twice daily (2×/day): Every 12 hours
- Three times daily (3×/day): Every 8 hours
- Four times daily (4×/day): Every 6 hours
Tips for Completing Your Course
Set a phone alarm for every dose. Take your antibiotic with food if it upsets your stomach (unless told otherwise). Store antibiotics as directed — some need refrigeration. Never share antibiotics with others or save them for later. If you experience side effects, call your doctor — do not simply stop taking them.
Completing the full course protects you from relapse and helps fight antibiotic resistance globally.
