Compression Stocking Size Calculator

Stocking Size

Compression stockings apply graduated pressure to the legs — tightest at the ankle and decreasing toward the knee or thigh. This assists blood flow back toward the heart and reduces swelling, fatigue, and the risk of clotting.

Getting the right size is critical. Too loose: no therapeutic benefit. Too tight: restricted circulation and discomfort.

Compression levels (measured in mmHg):

  • 8–15 mmHg — Mild compression. Ideal for travel, long periods of standing, general leg fatigue. Available over the counter.
  • 15–20 mmHg — Moderate compression. Recommended for mild varicose veins, pregnancy-related swelling, tired or achy legs. Over the counter.
  • 20–30 mmHg — Firm (medical grade). Used for DVT prevention, post-surgical recovery, moderate varicose veins, lymphedema management. Often requires a recommendation.
  • 30–40 mmHg — Extra firm. Prescription only. For severe venous insufficiency, post-thrombotic syndrome. Must be fitted by a medical professional.

Key measurement points:

  • Ankle circumference — measured at the narrowest point just above the ankle bone. This is the primary sizing measurement.
  • Calf circumference — measured at the widest point of the calf.
  • Thigh circumference — only needed for thigh-high or pantyhose style stockings.

Typical sizing guide (ankle measurement):

  • Small: 18–22 cm
  • Medium: 22–26 cm
  • Large: 26–30 cm
  • XL: 30–35 cm
  • XXL: 35+ cm
