Steps to Miles/Km
Convert step count to miles or kilometers using your stride length.
See how far 5,000 and 10,000 steps take you based on your height and walking pace.
Distance = Number of Steps × Step Length
This calculator converts your step count into distance walked, shown in both miles and kilometers. The default stride length is 2.5 feet (0.76 m), which is the average for adults.
What the variables mean:
- Steps – the total number of steps from your pedometer, fitness tracker, or phone
- Stride Length – the distance covered by one step, measured from heel to heel
Typical stride lengths by height:
| Height | Average Stride |
|---|---|
| 5'0" (152 cm) | 2.1 ft (64 cm) |
| 5'4" (163 cm) | 2.3 ft (70 cm) |
| 5'8" (173 cm) | 2.5 ft (76 cm) |
| 6'0" (183 cm) | 2.7 ft (82 cm) |
| 6'4" (193 cm) | 2.9 ft (88 cm) |
Common step count distances (at 2.5 ft stride):
- 5,000 steps is about 2.4 miles (3.8 km)
- 10,000 steps is about 4.7 miles (7.6 km)
- 15,000 steps is about 7.1 miles (11.4 km)
When to use this calculator: Use it to see how far you actually walked based on your daily step count. Many health guidelines recommend 10,000 steps per day, but knowing the actual distance helps you plan walking routes and set realistic goals.
Tips:
- Measure your personal stride by walking 10 steps normally, measuring the total distance, and dividing by 10.
- Walking speed also affects stride length – faster walking naturally increases your stride.
- Running strides are typically 40-60% longer than walking strides.
- The calculator shows the total in feet and meters as well as miles and kilometers.
