Dilution Recipe

Why dilution matters:

Essential oils are highly concentrated plant extracts. A single drop of peppermint oil contains the equivalent of roughly 28 cups of peppermint tea. Applied undiluted (neat) to skin, most essential oils cause irritation, sensitization, or chemical burns. Proper dilution in a carrier oil makes them safe for topical use.

The dilution formula: Drops of essential oil = (Carrier oil volume in mL × Dilution % × 20) / 100

The number 20 comes from the standard dropper: approximately 20 drops per mL of essential oil (this varies slightly by oil viscosity, but 20 is the accepted industry average).

Safe dilution percentages by use:

Application Dilution % Drops per oz (30 mL)
Facial care 0.5–1% 3–6 drops
Daily body lotion 1–2% 6–12 drops
Massage oil (adults) 2–3% 12–18 drops
Acute muscle pain 3–5% 18–30 drops
Spot treatment (short term) 5–10% 30–60 drops
Children (6–12 years) 0.5–1% 3–6 drops
Children (2–6 years) 0.25–0.5% 1–3 drops
Elderly / sensitive skin 1% 6 drops

Worked example: You want a 2.5% massage oil blend using 60 mL (2 oz) of sweet almond oil:

  • Drops = (60 × 2.5 × 20) / 100 = 30 drops total
  • For a blend of lavender and eucalyptus (2:1 ratio): 20 drops lavender + 10 drops eucalyptus

Common carrier oils and their properties:

  • Sweet almond oil: Lightweight, good all-purpose, absorbs well
  • Jojoba oil: Technically a wax, closest to skin’s natural sebum, long shelf life
  • Coconut oil (fractionated): Very light, odorless, stays liquid
  • Olive oil: Heavier, good for dry skin, strong scent
  • Grapeseed oil: Light, almost odorless, good for oily skin

Oils requiring extra caution (use at 0.5% or less): Cinnamon bark, clove bud, oregano, thyme (thymol chemotype), wintergreen, and birch are known irritants or sensitizers. Always start with the lowest recommended dilution.

Shelf life tip: Blends made with grapeseed or sweet almond oil last 6–12 months. Jojoba-based blends can last 2+ years. Adding 0.5% vitamin E (tocopherol) extends shelf life.
