Legal Shooting Hours

In most jurisdictions, legal hunting hours begin 30 minutes before sunrise and end 30 minutes after sunset. This coincides roughly with civil twilight — when there is enough natural light to safely identify your target and what lies beyond it.

Why civil twilight? Civil twilight is defined as when the sun’s geometric center is between 0° and 6° below the horizon. During civil twilight, there is enough ambient light to see clearly without artificial lighting. Most hunting regulations are written with safety and positive target identification in mind.

Common hunting light regulations:

Jurisdiction Rule
Most US states 30 min before sunrise to 30 min after sunset
Some deer states Sunrise to sunset only
Waterfowl (US) 30 min before sunrise to sunset
Night hunting (predators) State-specific, often year-round with restrictions

Timing your hunt:

  • Deer are most active at dawn and dusk — being in your stand 1–2 hours before legal light is standard practice
  • First legal light on opening morning is the most productive time for many big game species
  • Know the exact sunrise time for your specific hunting location, not just the nearest city

Time zone note: This calculator gives UTC times. Add your local UTC offset:

  • US Eastern: UTC−5 (EST) or UTC−4 (EDT)
  • US Central: UTC−6 / UTC−5
  • UK: UTC±0 (GMT) or UTC+1 (BST)
  • Central Europe: UTC+1 / UTC+2
