Ice Fishing Tip-Up Spacing Calculator
Calculate tip-up hole spacing and grid pattern from tip-up count and area dimensions.
Returns hole distances in feet and a layout for maximum lake coverage.
Optimal tip-up spacing for ice fishing
Tip-up spacing determines how much water you cover and how quickly you can reach a flag when it trips. The goal is to maximize water coverage while staying close enough to respond within 30–60 seconds — fish can spit the bait if you take too long.
Spacing formula for a grid pattern:
Spacing = √(Area ÷ Number of tip-ups)
For a line pattern along a structure (weed edge, drop-off):
Spacing = Total line length ÷ (Number of tip-ups - 1)
Legal limits by common jurisdictions:
| Region | Max Tip-Ups | Max Hooks per Tip-Up |
|---|---|---|
| Minnesota | 2 lines total | 1 hook each |
| Wisconsin | 3 lines total | 1 hook each |
| Michigan | 3 tip-ups | 1 hook each |
| New York | 5 tip-ups | 1 hook each |
| Vermont | 8 tip-ups | 2 hooks each |
| Ontario (Canada) | 2 lines total | 1 hook each |
Always check your local regulations. The calculator assumes you know your legal limit.
Recommended spacing by target species:
| Species | Min Spacing | Max Spacing | Depth Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walleye | 10 m (33 ft) | 25 m (82 ft) | 3–10 m |
| Northern pike | 15 m (50 ft) | 40 m (130 ft) | 1–6 m |
| Lake trout | 20 m (65 ft) | 50 m (165 ft) | 10–30 m |
| Perch | 5 m (16 ft) | 15 m (50 ft) | 2–8 m |
| Crappie | 5 m (16 ft) | 12 m (40 ft) | 3–8 m |
Worked example — 5 tip-ups for walleye on a 50m weed edge:
Line pattern along the weed edge:
Spacing = 50 m ÷ (5 - 1) = 12.5 m between each tip-up
Place tip-ups at 0m, 12.5m, 25m, 37.5m, and 50m along the weed line. Set depths at varying levels (3m, 5m, 7m) to find where fish are holding.
Pattern strategies:
- Line pattern: Best for fishing along structure edges (weed lines, drop-offs, channel edges). Spread tip-ups evenly along the feature.
- Grid pattern: Best for covering open flats or basins where fish could be anywhere. Creates a square grid.
- Cluster pattern: 2–3 close together (3–5m apart) near a known hotspot, with the rest spread wider to explore. Good when you know the general area but not the exact spot.
Response time matters: At a comfortable walk on ice (about 1 m/s or 3 ft/s), you can reach a tip-up 25m away in 25 seconds. At 50m, it takes nearly a minute. Pike and walleye will often hold the bait for 15–30 seconds before swallowing it. If you are too far away, you may miss the hookset window.
Hole diameter: Standard ice fishing holes are 20–25 cm (8–10 inches). For pike, drill 25 cm holes. Space holes at least 1.5 m from any existing hole to avoid weakening the ice between them.
