Safe Withdrawal Rate (SWR)
The famous 4% Rule (Bengen, 1994) states that retirees can withdraw 4% of their portfolio in year one, then adjust for inflation each year, and the portfolio will last at least 30 years across most historical market conditions.
Annual Withdrawal = Portfolio × Withdrawal Rate
Each year: Portfolio = Portfolio × (1 + return) − Withdrawal × (1 + inflation)^year
A higher withdrawal rate depletes the portfolio faster. A lower rate (3%) is more conservative; higher rates (5–6%) carry more risk.
