Jewelry Chain Length Calculator

Calculate the perfect necklace or bracelet chain length based on body measurements, pendant size, and desired fit.

Recommended Chain Length

Choosing the right chain length is essential for both comfort and aesthetics. A necklace that hangs too high feels choking, while one that hangs too low looks unbalanced. For bracelets, an overly tight chain digs in and an overly loose one catches on things. Proper sizing depends on body measurements and the intended style.

Necklace Length Formula

Chain Length = Neck Circumference + Style Drop × 2 + Pendant Allowance + Clasp Allowance

Where:

  • Neck Circumference: Measured snugly around the base of the neck with a flexible tape
  • Style Drop: The distance below the collarbone where the lowest point of the necklace should sit
  • Pendant Allowance: Add half the pendant height so the pendant hangs at the intended position (not the bail)
  • Clasp Allowance: Typically 1.5–2.5 cm for the clasp and jump rings

Necklace Style Reference

Style Name Total Length Style Drop Sits At
Collar 35–38 cm (14–15 in) 0–2 cm Tight on the neck
Choker 40–43 cm (16–17 in) 2–5 cm Base of neck
Princess 45–50 cm (18–20 in) 5–10 cm Collarbone
Matinee 56–61 cm (22–24 in) 12–18 cm Above bust
Opera 71–86 cm (28–34 in) 22–35 cm At or below bust

Bracelet Length Formula

Bracelet Length = Wrist Circumference + Ease Allowance + Clasp Allowance

Where:

  • Ease Allowance: Snug fit = 1.0 cm, Comfortable = 1.5 cm, Loose = 2.5 cm
  • Clasp Allowance: 1.5–2.0 cm depending on clasp type

Worked Example

A person with a 36 cm neck circumference wants a princess-length necklace with a 3 cm pendant:

Chain Length = 36 + (7.5 × 2) + 1.5 + 2.0 = 36 + 15 + 1.5 + 2.0 = 54.5 cm

They would order a 55 cm (22 inch) chain.

Common Wrist Sizes

Category Average Wrist Bracelet Length
Women (small) 14 cm 16.5 cm
Women (medium) 16 cm 18.5 cm
Women (large) 18 cm 20.5 cm
Men (small) 17 cm 19.5 cm
Men (medium) 19 cm 21.5 cm
Men (large) 21 cm 23.5 cm

Chain Weight Considerations

Heavier chains hang lower under their own weight. A thick cable or curb chain in sterling silver may sit 1–2 cm lower than a delicate chain of the same length. For heavy chains, subtract 1 cm from the calculated length.
