Kayak Load Capacity Calculator
Calculate safe kayak load capacity.
Check if your gear, body weight, and equipment fit within your kayak limits.
Every kayak has a manufacturer-rated maximum load capacity. Exceeding it reduces freeboard (the distance between the waterline and the top of the hull), which makes the kayak unstable and prone to swamping.
Performance load rule: Manufacturers typically rate capacity at the point where the kayak has very little freeboard. For comfortable, safe paddling, stay at 70–80% of the stated capacity. This is called the “performance load.”
Performance load = max capacity × 0.75
What counts as load:
- Paddler body weight
- Clothing and personal gear
- Water, food, safety kit
- Camping equipment (for multi-day trips)
- Fishing tackle and rod holders
Worked example:
- Kayak max capacity: 150 kg
- Performance load limit: 150 × 0.75 = 112.5 kg
- Paddler weight: 85 kg
- Gear weight: 15 kg
- Total load: 100 kg — within limit, 12.5 kg remaining
Freeboard guide:
- Above performance load: 10+ cm of freeboard, excellent stability
- At performance load: ~5 cm, still good
- At max capacity: ~2 cm, marginal and slow
- Over max capacity: unsafe
Tandem kayaks: Apply the same 75% rule — rated capacities are often 250–300 kg for tandems, but you should keep total load under 190–225 kg for safe handling.
