Leather Edge Paint Coverage Calculator

Calculate how much edge paint or edge coat you need based on total edge length, leather thickness, and number of coats.

Edge Paint Requirements

Why edge finishing matters:

Raw leather edges expose the fibrous cross-section of the hide. Unfinished edges look rough, absorb moisture, and fray over time. Edge paint (also called edge coat, edge dye, or edge finish) seals and colors the edges for a clean, professional look used on wallets, bags, belts, and watch straps.

Edge surface area formula:

The edge is a thin strip along every cut edge of a leather piece. Its area is:

Edge area = Total edge length × Leather thickness

For a wallet with 4 panels, each 4" × 3":

  • Perimeter of each panel: 2 × (4 + 3) = 14 inches
  • Some edges are folded (not painted), some are layered (multiple thicknesses glued together)
  • You paint the exposed composite edge, which may be 2–6 layers thick

Coverage rates by product type:

Product Coverage per mL Coverage per oz Notes
Uniters edge paint ~50 linear inches at 3mm thick ~1,500 in/oz Professional grade, 2–3 coats
Giardini edge paint ~45 linear inches at 3mm thick ~1,350 in/oz Italian, high quality
Tokonole (burnish) ~80 linear inches at 3mm thick ~2,400 in/oz Burnishing agent, not paint
CMC / Tragacanth ~100 linear inches at 3mm thick ~3,000 in/oz Traditional burnishing gum
Beeswax finish ~40 linear inches at 3mm thick ~1,200 in/oz Heat-applied wax finish

Number of coats:

Most edge paints require 2–3 coats for full, opaque coverage. Between coats:

  1. Apply thin coat with edge paint roller or finger
  2. Let dry completely (15–60 minutes depending on product)
  3. Sand lightly with 400–600 grit sandpaper
  4. Apply next coat

Worked example:

A bifold wallet with 6 edge-painted edges totaling 48 inches, 4mm composite thickness, 3 coats:

  • Edge area per coat: 48 × 0.157" (4mm) = 7.5 square inches
  • Total area (3 coats): 7.5 × 3 = 22.5 square inches
  • At ~50 linear inches per mL (3mm): adjusted for 4mm = 50 × (3/4) = 37.5 in/mL
  • Paint needed: 48 × 3 ÷ 37.5 = 3.8 mL per wallet
  • A 30 mL bottle makes approximately 8 wallets

Pro tips:

  • Thin coats dry faster and build up smoother than thick coats
  • Sand between every coat for professional results
  • Use a heat creaser before painting to compress the edge fibers
  • Store paint upside down to prevent the cap from sealing shut
  • Edge paint has a shelf life of 6–12 months once opened
