Leather Rivet Sizing Calculator
Calculate the correct rivet length, cap size, and setting force for leather projects based on material thickness and rivet type.
Why rivet sizing matters:
A rivet that is too short will not form a proper head and pulls out under stress. A rivet that is too long creates an oversized, mushroomed head that looks sloppy and catches on things. The post must extend just enough past the leather stack to form a secure cap.
Rivet post length formula:
Required post length = Total leather thickness + Cap height + Setting allowance
For double-cap rivets (most common in leatherwork):
Post length = Leather stack thickness + 2–3 mm
For single-cap (tubular) rivets:
Post length = Leather stack thickness + 3–4 mm
Rivet types and their applications:
| Rivet Type | Cap Diameter | Post Lengths Available | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rapid (double cap) | 6, 8, 9, 10 mm | 6, 8, 10, 12 mm | Bags, belts, general |
| Tubular | 7, 9, 11 mm | 6, 8, 10, 12, 15 mm | Heavy duty, straps |
| Crystal/rhinestone | 6, 8 mm | 6, 8 mm | Decorative only |
| Dome (mushroom) | 8, 10, 12 mm | 6, 8, 10 mm | Decorative, jackets |
| Flat back | 6, 8, 10 mm | 4, 6, 8 mm | Where flush back needed |
Setting force reference:
| Rivet Type | Tool | Approximate Force |
|---|---|---|
| Rapid rivet 6mm | Hand setter + mallet | Light tap |
| Rapid rivet 9mm | Hand setter + mallet | Moderate tap |
| Tubular rivet | Tubular setter + mallet | Firm tap |
| Heavy tubular 12mm | Press or heavy mallet | 10–15 kg force |
Example calculation:
Two layers of 2 mm veg-tan leather with a double-cap rivet:
- Leather stack: 2 + 2 = 4 mm
- Setting allowance: 2.5 mm
- Required post length: 4 + 2.5 = 6.5 mm → use 8 mm post
- Cap size: 9 mm (standard for medium projects)
Leather thickness guide:
| Leather Weight | Thickness (mm) | oz (US) | Common Uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | 0.8–1.2 | 2–3 oz | Linings, wallets |
| Medium | 1.4–2.0 | 3.5–5 oz | Bags, cases |
| Heavy | 2.0–3.0 | 5–7.5 oz | Belts, straps |
| Extra heavy | 3.2–4.0 | 8–10 oz | Holsters, armor |
| Strap weight | 4.0–5.5 | 10–14 oz | Heavy belts, collars |
Important tips:
Always punch a hole slightly smaller than the rivet post diameter — a tight fit prevents spinning. Use a proper rivet setter, not pliers, for clean results. Practice on scrap leather before committing to your project piece. If the rivet spins after setting, the hole was too large.
