Leather Tooling Area Calculator
Calculate the tooling area and time estimate for leather carving projects based on pattern dimensions and complexity.
Leather tooling (carving) is the process of creating decorative patterns on vegetable-tanned leather using swivel knives, bevelers, and stamps. Estimating the tooling area and time required helps plan projects and price custom work accurately.
Area Calculation
For rectangular panels: Area = Length × Width
For circular or oval designs, the tooling area is often the full panel minus borders: Tooling Area = (Length − 2 × Border) × (Width − 2 × Border)
The border is the untooled margin around the design, typically 1.5–3 cm depending on the project.
Time Estimation Formula
Tooling Time (hours) = Tooling Area (cm²) × Complexity Factor / Speed Factor
Where:
- Complexity Factor reflects the density and difficulty of the design
- Speed Factor reflects the tooler’s experience level
Complexity Factors
| Design Style | Factor (hours/cm²) | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Simple geometric | 0.008 | Straight lines, basic stamps |
| Floral (Sheridan) | 0.020 | Flowing lines, beveling, pear shaders |
| Western/Scrollwork | 0.025 | Complex curves, deep beveling, backgrounding |
| Pictorial/Figurative | 0.030 | Portraits, animals, scenes |
| Fine filigree | 0.035 | Intricate detail, hair-on textures |
Skill Level Speed Factors
| Level | Speed Factor | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner | 0.5 | Learning tool control |
| Intermediate | 1.0 | Comfortable with basic techniques |
| Advanced | 1.5 | Efficient and confident |
| Master | 2.0 | Professional speed with high quality |
Worked Example
A wallet panel 20 × 10 cm with 1.5 cm borders, Sheridan floral design, intermediate skill:
Tooling area = (20 − 3) × (10 − 3) = 17 × 7 = 119 cm² Time = 119 × 0.020 / 1.0 = 2.38 hours (about 2 hours 23 minutes)
Leather Preparation Time
Before tooling, the leather must be cased (dampened to the correct moisture level). Casing typically adds 15–30 minutes of preparation. The leather stays workable for 1–3 hours depending on thickness, humidity, and temperature. For large projects, you may need to re-case sections multiple times.
Pricing Reference
Professional leather tooling is typically priced at $25–$75 per hour or $0.50–$2.00 per cm² depending on complexity and the artist’s reputation. Material cost for quality vegetable-tanned tooling leather (8–10 oz weight) runs approximately $8–$15 per square foot ($0.86–$1.61 per dm²).
