Martial Arts Belt Progression Time Calculator
Estimate how long it takes to reach each belt rank in karate, judo, taekwondo, and BJJ based on training frequency.
Belt progression in martial arts depends on the discipline, training frequency, individual aptitude, and the standards of each school or federation. This calculator provides general estimates based on typical progression timelines.
Estimated Time Formula
Time to Rank = Base Time × (3 / Sessions Per Week)
The base time assumes 3 sessions per week. Training more frequently reduces the calendar time, but most schools have minimum waiting periods between gradings regardless of skill.
Typical Belt Progression (at 3 sessions/week)
Karate (Shotokan/Goju-ryu)
| Belt | Color | Cumulative Time |
|---|---|---|
| 10th Kyu | White → Yellow | 3–4 months |
| 8th Kyu | Orange | 6–8 months |

Factors That Affect Progression
- Training frequency (biggest factor)
- Competition experience (accelerates in some systems)
- Age (adults progress faster in understanding, kids progress faster physically)
- School standards (vary significantly)
- Natural athleticism and prior martial arts experience
- Attendance at seminars and special training events
