Martial Arts Belt Progression Time Calculator

Estimate how long it takes to reach each belt rank in karate, judo, taekwondo, and BJJ based on training frequency.

Belt Progression Timeline

Belt progression in martial arts depends on the discipline, training frequency, individual aptitude, and the standards of each school or federation. This calculator provides general estimates based on typical progression timelines.

Estimated Time Formula

Time to Rank = Base Time × (3 / Sessions Per Week)

The base time assumes 3 sessions per week. Training more frequently reduces the calendar time, but most schools have minimum waiting periods between gradings regardless of skill.

Typical Belt Progression (at 3 sessions/week)

Karate (Shotokan/Goju-ryu)

Belt Color Cumulative Time
10th Kyu White → Yellow 3–4 months
8th Kyu Orange 6–8 months
6th Kyu Green 12–15 months
4th Kyu Purple/Blue 18–24 months
2nd Kyu Brown 30–36 months
1st Dan Black 4–5 years

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)

Belt Cumulative Time
White Start
Blue 1–2 years
Purple 3–5 years
Brown 5–7 years
Black 8–12 years

BJJ is known for its slow promotion. A black belt in BJJ typically requires 8–12 years of consistent training.

Taekwondo (WTF/Kukkiwon)

Belt Cumulative Time
White → Yellow 2–3 months
Green 6–9 months
Blue 12–15 months
Red 18–24 months
1st Dan Black 3–4 years

Judo (Kodokan)

Belt Cumulative Time
White → Yellow 3–6 months
Orange 6–12 months
Green 1–2 years
Brown 2–4 years
Black (Shodan) 4–6 years

Factors That Affect Progression

  • Training frequency (biggest factor)
  • Competition experience (accelerates in some systems)
  • Age (adults progress faster in understanding, kids progress faster physically)
  • School standards (vary significantly)
  • Natural athleticism and prior martial arts experience
  • Attendance at seminars and special training events
