How weight classes work in combat sports:
Weight classes exist to create fair competition. Each organization has its own divisions and limits. The weight you must hit is measured at weigh-in — typically 24 hours before the fight (MMA/boxing) or the morning of the event (wrestling/judo).

Weight cutting reality:
Most fighters compete 10–15 lbs below their walking-around weight. A fighter who walks at 175 lbs may compete at welterweight (170 lbs) or even lightweight (155 lbs).
Safe weight cut guidelines:
- Lose no more than 5–8% of bodyweight through water manipulation
- Rehydrate fully before competing — performance drops sharply above 3% dehydration
- Chronic large weight cuts increase concussion risk and kidney damage
