GPA (Grade Point Average) is a weighted average of your academic grades, where each course is weighted by the number of credit hours it carries.
Unweighted GPA formula:
GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) / Σ Credit Hours
Standard 4.0 grade point scale:
| Letter Grade | Grade Points |
|---|---|
| A+ / A | 4.0 |
| A− | 3.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 |
| B | 3.0 |
| B− | 2.7 |
| C+ | 2.3 |
| C | 2.0 |
| C− | 1.7 |
| D+ | 1.3 |
| D | 1.0 |
| F | 0.0 |
Worked example (unweighted):
- English Literature (A, 3 credits): 4.0 × 3 = 12.0
- Calculus (B+, 4 credits): 3.3 × 4 = 13.2
- Chemistry (B, 3 credits): 3.0 × 3 = 9.0
- History (A−, 3 credits): 3.7 × 3 = 11.1
- Total quality points: 12.0 + 13.2 + 9.0 + 11.1 = 45.3
- Total credit hours: 3 + 4 + 3 + 3 = 13
- GPA = 45.3 / 13 = 3.485 → rounds to 3.49
Weighted GPA adds bonus points for honors or AP courses:
- Honors course: add 0.5 to the grade points
- AP / IB course: add 1.0 to the grade points
Academic standing benchmarks:
- 3.7–4.0: Dean’s List / Summa Cum Laude
- 3.5–3.69: Magna Cum Laude
- 3.0–3.49: Good standing
- Below 2.0: Academic probation at most universities
