Model Train Layout Scenery Area Calculator

Calculate the scenery coverage area for your model train layout minus track, structures, and water features.

Scenery Coverage

Planning scenery coverage helps you estimate material quantities for ground cover, ballast, trees, and terrain. A model railroad layout’s total area is divided between track, structures, roads, water features, and open scenery.

Scenery Area Formula

Scenery Area = Total Layout Area − Track Area − Structure Footprints − Road Area − Water Features

Track Area Calculation

Track width varies by scale:

Scale Track Width Roadbed Width Total Corridor
Z (1:220) 6.5 mm 12 mm ~15 mm
N (1:160) 9 mm 18 mm ~22 mm
HO (1:87) 16.5 mm 32 mm ~40 mm
O (1:48) 32 mm 55 mm ~65 mm
G (1:22.5) 45 mm 75 mm ~90 mm

Track Area = Total Track Length × Corridor Width

Convert the corridor width to the same units as your layout dimensions.

Typical Area Breakdown

A well-designed layout typically allocates:

Element % of Total Area
Open scenery (grass, dirt, rock) 40–55%
Track and ballast corridor 15–25%
Structures and yards 10–20%
Roads and parking 5–10%
Water features 0–10%
Trees/forest canopy 10–20% (overlapping scenery)

Worked Example — 4’ × 8’ HO Layout

Total area: 4 × 8 = 32 sq ft = 4,608 sq in

  • Track: 50 feet of HO track × 1.57" corridor = 942 sq in (20%)
  • Structures: 4 buildings averaging 15 sq in each = 60 sq in
  • Roads: estimated 200 sq in
  • Water: small pond = 80 sq in
  • Scenery = 4,608 − 942 − 60 − 200 − 80 = 3,326 sq in = 23.1 sq ft (72%)

Material Estimates per Square Foot of Scenery

Material Coverage Cost (approx.)
Static grass 1 bag covers ~3 sq ft $8–12/bag
Ground foam (fine) 1 shaker covers ~4 sq ft $6–10/shaker
Ballast (track) 1 bag covers ~8 linear feet $5–8/bag
Plaster cloth 1 roll covers ~8 sq ft $8–15/roll
Scenic cement 1 bottle covers ~6 sq ft $5–8/bottle
Trees (medium) 3–5 per sq ft for forest $10–20/pack of 20

Scale Conversion

To convert real-world dimensions to model scale: Model Size = Real Size / Scale Ratio

A 50-foot real building in HO scale: 50 × 12 / 87 = 6.9 inches
