Mushroom Substrate Volume Calculator
Calculate the amount of substrate needed for mushroom growing bags, trays, or buckets based on container dimensions.
Calculating substrate volume for mushroom cultivation
Substrate is the nutrient material mushrooms grow on. The volume you need depends on your container type and the substrate recipe. Getting the right volume ensures proper colonization and maximizes yield.
Volume formula for common containers:
Rectangular tray: Volume (liters) = Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Depth (cm) ÷ 1000
Round bucket: Volume (liters) = π × Radius² × Height ÷ 1000 (all in cm)
Grow bag: Use the bag dimensions (typically 30×18×60 cm or similar). Fill to about 60–70% of bag height to allow gas exchange space.
Dry weight from volume:
Hydrated substrate is much heavier than dry. The conversion depends on substrate type.
| Substrate Type | Dry Density (g/L) | Hydrated Density (g/L) | Field Capacity Moisture % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardwood sawdust | 180–220 | 550–650 | 60–65% |
| Straw (chopped) | 60–80 | 250–350 | 70–75% |
| Coco coir | 70–90 | 400–500 | 65–70% |
| Coffee grounds | 350–400 | 500–600 | 55–60% |
| Manure compost | 250–300 | 600–700 | 65–70% |
| Hardwood pellets | 550–650 | 550–650* | 60–65% |
*Pellets are dense before hydration, then expand 3–4× in volume when soaked.
Worked example — 5-gallon bucket of straw:
A 5-gallon bucket is approximately 19 liters usable volume (accounting for lid space and drainage holes).
Dry straw needed: 19 L × 70 g/L = 1,330 g = 1.33 kg dry straw Water to add: At 72% moisture, you need 1,330 g ÷ 0.28 × 0.72 = 3,420 g water ≈ 3.4 liters Hydrated weight: 1,330 + 3,420 = 4,750 g ≈ 4.75 kg total
Substrate depth guidelines:
| Mushroom Type | Optimal Depth | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Oyster mushrooms | 10–15 cm | Shallow trays or bags |
| Shiitake | 15–20 cm | Supplemented sawdust blocks |
| Lion’s mane | 12–18 cm | Sawdust blocks, top-fruiting |
| King oyster | 15–20 cm | Dense supplemented blocks |
| Button/Portobello | 15–20 cm | Composted manure in trays |
| Wine cap | 15–25 cm | Outdoor straw beds |
Supplementation: Many cultivators add wheat bran, soy hulls, or gypsum at 5–20% of dry substrate weight to increase yields. For oyster mushrooms on straw, adding 10% soy hulls can increase yield by 20–30%. Always pasteurize or sterilize supplemented substrates to prevent contamination.
Yield expectations: Most species yield 20–30% of wet substrate weight in the first flush (harvest). A 5 kg substrate block of oyster mushrooms can produce 1–1.5 kg of fresh mushrooms across 2–3 flushes.
