Setlist Time Calculator
Calculate total setlist duration for live performances.
Plan your gig time with song lengths, breaks, and encore time.
Setlist Time helps musicians and event planners calculate the total duration of a live performance, including songs, transitions, and breaks.
The basic formula:
Total Time = (Number of Songs × Average Song Length) + (Transitions × Transition Time) + Break Time + Encore Time
Average song lengths by genre:
- Pop/Rock: 3-4 minutes
- Jazz: 5-8 minutes (with improvisation)
- Classical: 10-20 minutes per piece
- Electronic/DJ set: continuous, but tracks average 5-7 minutes
- Country: 3-4 minutes
- Metal/Punk: 3-5 minutes
- Folk/Acoustic: 3-5 minutes
Transitions between songs:
- Quick transitions (experienced band, no tuning changes): 15-30 seconds
- Standard transitions (some banter, minor adjustments): 30-60 seconds
- Extended transitions (instrument changes, tuning, gear swaps): 1-3 minutes
Standard set lengths for common gig types:
- Opening act: 30-45 minutes (8-12 songs)
- Headliner (small venue): 60-90 minutes (15-25 songs)
- Headliner (concert): 90-120 minutes (20-30 songs)
- Wedding band set: 45 minutes per set, 2-3 sets, with 15-minute breaks
- Bar/pub gig: 3-4 sets of 45 minutes each
Planning tips:
- Always prepare 2-3 extra songs in case you finish early
- Include at least one slow song per set for pacing variety
- End each set with an energetic song to leave the audience wanting more
- Encore songs typically add 5-10 minutes (1-3 songs)
- Sound check is separate, typically 15-30 minutes before the show
The rule of thumb: A typical full set contains about 4 songs per 15 minutes of performance time when including transitions.
