Bookbinding Signature Calculator
Calculate signature count, sheet layout, and spine thickness for hand-bound books.
Covers Coptic, case, and pamphlet binding.
In bookbinding, a “signature” (also called a “gathering” or “quire”) is a group of sheets folded together and sewn as a unit. The number of sheets per signature and total signatures determine the book’s page count, spine thickness, and sewing pattern.
Key Terminology
- Folio: one sheet folded once = 4 pages
- Quarto: one sheet folded twice = 8 pages
- Octavo: one sheet folded three times = 16 pages
- Leaf: one piece of paper (front = recto, back = verso)
- Signature: a nested group of folded sheets sewn together
Page Count Formula
Total pages = Sheets per signature × Pages per sheet × Number of signatures
For a standard folio fold (one fold per sheet): Pages per sheet = 4 (front and back of two leaves) Total pages = Sheets per signature × 4 × Number of signatures
Spine Thickness Formula
Spine thickness = Number of signatures × Sheets per signature × Paper thickness × Swell factor
The swell factor accounts for thread bulk and the air gaps between nested sheets. For hand-sewn books:
- Pamphlet stitch: swell factor = 1.1
- Coptic binding: swell factor = 1.3–1.5
- Case binding (tape/cord): swell factor = 1.2–1.4
- Japanese stab binding: swell factor = 1.0 (no swell, sheets stacked flat)
Common Paper Thicknesses
| Paper Type | Thickness (mm) | Weight (gsm) |
|---|---|---|
| Onionskin / Bible paper | 0.04 | 30–40 |
| Standard copy paper | 0.10 | 80 |
| Book text paper | 0.12 | 90–100 |
| Drawing paper | 0.18 | 120–140 |
| Card stock | 0.30 | 200–250 |
| Watercolor paper | 0.40 | 300 |
Worked Example — 120-Page Coptic-Bound Journal
Target: 120 pages. Using folio fold: 4 pages per sheet, 4 sheets per signature = 16 pages per signature. Number of signatures = 120 / 16 = 7.5, round up to 8 signatures (128 pages). Total sheets = 8 × 4 = 32 sheets.
Using 90 gsm book text paper (0.12 mm thick) with Coptic swell factor 1.4: Spine thickness = 8 × 4 × 0.12 × 1.4 = 5.38 mm.
Cut sheets to 2× page width + 3 mm trim allowance, by page height + 3 mm trim allowance. For a 5" × 7" finished book: cut sheets to 10.5" × 7.25", fold in half, nest 4 per signature, and sew.
Grain Direction
Paper grain must run parallel to the spine (vertical in the finished book). Folding against the grain causes cracking and pages that refuse to lie flat. Test grain direction by gently bending the sheet both ways — it bends more easily with the grain.
Cover Board Thickness
For case-bound (hardcover) books:
- Thin: 1.5 mm board (small books up to A5)
- Medium: 2.0 mm board (standard books)
- Thick: 3.0 mm board (large or heavy books)
Cover boards should overhang the text block by 3 mm on the top, bottom, and fore-edge (called the “square”).
