Babysitter rates vary widely depending on your location, the sitter’s experience, and the number of children. This calculator helps you estimate a fair total cost including common adjustments.

Average babysitter rates in the United States (2025):

Region Hourly Rate (1 child)
Rural / small town $12–$16/hr
Mid-size city $16–$20/hr
Major city (NYC, LA, SF) $20–$30/hr
Experienced / certified sitter +$3–$5/hr above average
Nanny (full-time professional) $25–$40/hr

Extra children adjustment: Most sitters charge an additional $1–$2 per hour for each child beyond the first. This reflects the increased supervision and responsibility. This calculator uses a flat $1/hr per additional child.

Late-night premium: Many sitters charge more for hours after 10 PM, as it may affect their sleep schedule. A common surcharge is $2–$3 per hour for late-night hours. This calculator applies a $2/hr premium to the full session when late-night hours are selected.

Tipping: Tipping a babysitter is not universally required but is appreciated, especially for last-minute bookings, holiday evenings, extra-challenging situations, or exceptional service. A common tip range is 10–20% of the total.

Budgeting tips:

  • Build a consistent relationship with one or two trusted sitters — regulars are more reliable.
  • Communicate any special needs (allergies, bedtime routines, medications) clearly upfront.
  • Pay on time and fairly — good sitters are in high demand in most areas.
  • Consider babysitter co-ops with neighbors to reduce costs.
