Chore-Based Allowance Calculator

Calculate a fair weekly allowance for your child based on completed chores.
Assign a dollar value to each chore and track earnings.

Weekly Allowance Earned

Chore-based allowances teach children that money is earned, not given — a foundational lesson in financial responsibility.

Two common allowance approaches:

  1. Chore-based (this calculator): Children earn money for each chore completed. Incomplete chores mean reduced pay. This mirrors how the working world operates.

  2. Flat allowance: A fixed weekly amount regardless of chores. Chores are expected as part of family membership. Allowance is separate and used for financial education.

Research from financial literacy experts at Cambridge University found that children form their core financial habits by age 7. Starting chore-based allowances as early as age 3–4 (with age-appropriate tasks) gives children years of practice before they face real financial decisions.

Age-appropriate chore suggestions and suggested pay:

  • Ages 3–5: Put toys away ($0.25–$0.50/task), help set the table ($0.25), feed a pet ($0.25–$0.50)
  • Ages 6–8: Make their bed ($0.50–$1.00), clear dishes ($0.50), water plants ($0.50–$1.00)
  • Ages 9–12: Vacuum ($1.00–$2.00), take out trash ($0.75–$1.50), load dishwasher ($0.75–$1.00)
  • Ages 13+: Mow lawn ($5–$10), babysit siblings ($5–$15/session), deep clean bathroom ($2–$5)

Teaching the “three jars” system: Divide allowance into three categories:

  • Spend (50%): For immediate wants — treats, small toys, games
  • Save (40%): For bigger goals — video game, bike, special experience
  • Give (10%): For charity or helping others

This simple system builds habits that carry into adult life and helps children understand budgeting, delayed gratification, and generosity.

Important note: Allowances work best when paired with conversations about money. Explain why you are paying a certain amount, and let children experience the natural consequences of spending all their money before the week ends.
