Diaper Cost Calculator
Estimate how many diapers your baby needs and total cost through potty training.
Compare disposable vs. cloth diaper expenses.
Diaper costs represent one of the largest recurring expenses in a baby’s first three years. The key variables are diaper type, usage frequency (which changes with age), and price per unit. Understanding the math lets parents budget accurately and identify the real cost of premium vs. budget brands.
Total diaper cost formula: Total Cost = Daily Diapers × Days × Cost per Diaper
For the full diaper-wearing period across multiple stages: Lifetime Cost = Σ (Diapers/Day × Days in Stage × Cost per Diaper in Stage)
Where:
- Diapers/Day — changes significantly by age (newborns use 10–12/day; toddlers use 4–6/day)
- Days in Stage — duration of each age bracket
- Cost per Diaper — varies by brand and size (larger sizes cost more per unit)
- Σ = sum across all stages
Average daily diaper usage by age:
- Newborn (0–1 month): 10–12 diapers/day
- 1–5 months: 8–10 diapers/day
- 5–9 months: 6–8 diapers/day
- 9–18 months: 5–6 diapers/day
- 18–36 months: 4–5 diapers/day (until potty trained)
Average cost per diaper by brand tier:
- Budget (store brand): $0.12–$0.18
- Mid-range (Luvs, Kirkland): $0.18–$0.24
- Premium (Pampers, Huggies): $0.25–$0.35
- Organic/eco: $0.35–$0.55
Worked example: Parent uses Pampers ($0.28/diaper) for 2.5 years (30 months).
- Months 0–1: 11/day × 30 days × $0.28 = $92.40
- Months 1–5: 9/day × 120 days × $0.28 = $302.40
- Months 5–9: 7/day × 120 days × $0.28 = $235.20
- Months 9–18: 5.5/day × 270 days × $0.28 = $415.80
- Months 18–30: 4.5/day × 365 days × $0.28 = $460.35
Total = $1,506.15 in diapers alone — before wipes, rash cream, or diaper pail bags.
Switching to a store brand at $0.15/diaper reduces this to approximately $806 — a savings of $700 over the diaper-wearing period.
