Diapers are one of the largest ongoing costs of early parenthood. Estimating usage accurately helps you budget and buy in bulk at the best price.
Daily usage formula: Daily Diaper Count = Changes per Day (by age)
Typical diaper change frequencies:
- Newborn (0–1 month): 10–12 diapers/day
- 1–5 months: 8–10 diapers/day
- 5–9 months: 6–8 diapers/day
- 9–12 months: 5–6 diapers/day
- 12–18 months: 4–5 diapers/day
- 18–24 months: 3–4 diapers/day
Monthly usage: Monthly Diapers = Daily Changes × 30
Monthly cost: Monthly Cost = Monthly Diapers × Cost per Diaper
Worked example: A 4-month-old uses 9 diapers/day. Brand-name diapers cost $0.28 each. Monthly Diapers = 9 × 30 = 270 Monthly Cost = 270 × $0.28 = $75.60/month
Total diaper cost to potty training (~2.5 years): Most children use approximately 6,000–7,000 diapers total before potty training. At $0.25 average cost per diaper: Total Cost = 6,500 × $0.25 = $1,625
Cost-saving reference:
- Store brand diapers: $0.14–$0.18 per diaper
- Mid-range brands: $0.20–$0.28 per diaper
- Premium brands: $0.28–$0.40 per diaper
