Chinchilla Cage Size Calculator

Calculate the minimum and recommended cage size for pet chinchillas — floor area, height, and ledge space by number of animals.

Cage Size Recommendation

Chinchilla Housing Requirements

Chinchillas are active, agile rodents originally from the Andes mountains of South America. They are exceptional jumpers — capable of leaping over 1.8 m (6 ft) in a single bound. This athleticism means their cage needs both floor space and vertical height.

Minimum Size Standards

Standard Floor Area Height
Minimum (single chinchilla) 0.5 m² (5,400 cm²) 90 cm (36 in)
Recommended (single) 0.9 m² 120+ cm (48+ in)
Minimum (pair) 0.9 m² 120 cm (48 in)
Recommended (pair) 1.4 m² 150+ cm (60+ in)

In imperial terms, the minimum for one chinchilla is approximately 24 in × 36 in × 36 in (W × D × H).

The Importance of Vertical Space

Chinchillas in the wild live on rocky mountain slopes and sleep in crevices. They are highly motivated to jump and climb. A tall cage with multiple ledges, platforms, and ramps enriches their environment enormously.

Essential Cage Elements

Item Specification
Ledges / platforms Solid wood or fleece-covered; no wire mesh (wire hurts feet)
Wooden hides At least one per chinchilla, plus one extra
Dust bath house Large enough to roll fully; used 2–3× per week
Food hopper/bowl Fixed to bars to prevent tipping
Water bottle 250 ml+ sipper bottle, changed daily
Chew toys Fresh wooden toys; chinchillas must constantly chew

Dust Bathing (Unique Requirement)

Chinchillas cannot get wet — water destroys the density of their ultra-fine fur (80+ hairs per follicle vs. 1–3 in humans). They clean themselves by rolling in volcanic ash dust for 5–10 minutes, 2–3 times per week. The dust bath house should have enough room to fully roll over.

Social Needs

Chinchillas are highly social and generally do better in pairs or small groups. Same-sex pairs (especially females or neutered males) tend to bond well. Introduce chinchillas on neutral ground and monitor closely for the first several weeks.

Temperature Sensitivity

Chinchillas are prone to heat stroke — keep the environment below 25°C (77°F). Ideal temperature range is 15–20°C (59–68°F). Never place the cage in direct sunlight or near heating vents.
