Dog Food Monthly Cost Calculator
Calculate monthly and annual dog food costs from your dog's weight, food price per bag, and bag size.
Compare dry, wet, and raw food spending over time.
Monthly dog food cost depends on your dog’s weight, the food type you choose, and how much it eats each day. This calculator combines feeding guidelines with per-pound food prices to give a realistic monthly estimate.
Daily Food (cups) = Dog Weight (lbs) × Cups per lb
Monthly Cost = Daily Food (cups) × Cost per Cup × 30
General feeding guidelines by weight:
- Under 10 lbs: 0.5–1 cup/day
- 10–25 lbs: 1–2 cups/day
- 25–50 lbs: 2–3 cups/day
- 50–75 lbs: 3–4 cups/day
- Over 75 lbs: 4–5+ cups/day
Typical food costs (per 30-lb bag):
- Economy dry kibble: $20–$35 (~$0.04–$0.07/cup)
- Mid-range dry kibble: $40–$65 (~$0.08–$0.13/cup)
- Premium / grain-free: $65–$100 (~$0.13–$0.20/cup)
- Wet / canned food: $1.50–$3.50 per can (higher cost, smaller serving)
- Raw / fresh meal services: $100–$250/month depending on size
Worked example: A 45-lb Labrador eating premium kibble:
- Daily intake: ~2.5 cups
- Cost per cup: $0.17
- Monthly cost: 2.5 × $0.17 × 30 = $12.75/month
Additional pet food costs to budget for:
- Treats: $10–$30/month
- Supplements (joints, omega-3): $10–$25/month
- Prescription diets (if needed): can double or triple base cost
Puppies and seniors often require more frequent feeding and specialized formulas — factor in a 10–20% cost premium.
