Wheel Recommendation
Exercise wheel size is critical for small pet health. A wheel that is too small forces the animal to arch its back, causing spinal injuries.
Minimum wheel diameter by species:
- Dwarf Hamster: 8 inches (20 cm) minimum
- Syrian Hamster: 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) minimum
- Mouse: 6–8 inches (15–20 cm) minimum
- Gerbil: 8–10 inches (20–25 cm) minimum
- Rat: 12–14 inches (30–36 cm) minimum
- Chinchilla: 14–16 inches (36–41 cm) minimum
- Hedgehog: 12 inches (30 cm) minimum
The back test: Watch your pet running on the wheel. If their back is arching upward, the wheel is too small. Their back should be flat or slightly curved downward while running.
Wheel types:
- Solid surface wheels are safest (no mesh or rungs)
- Flying saucers are good alternatives for some species
- Avoid wire wheels — they can trap and injure toes
