Pet Travel Crate Size Calculator
Find the correct crate size for your dog or cat for travel or home use.
Based on IATA airline regulations and standard sizing guides.
Choosing the right crate size is important for both your pet’s comfort and safety — especially for air travel.
IATA (International Air Transport Association) sizing rules: A crate must be large enough for the animal to:
- Stand with its head fully upright (no neck bending)
- Turn around completely
- Lie down in a natural position
Minimum crate dimensions (IATA formula):
- Length: Nose to tail base + half the length of front legs (approx. body length × 1.1)
- Width: Shoulder width × 2
- Height: Floor to top of head (when standing)
Standard crate size categories:
- XS: Up to 50 cm long — toy breeds, cats under 3 kg
- S: 50–61 cm — small dogs (Chihuahua, Yorkshire Terrier), average cats
- M: 61–76 cm — medium dogs (Beagle, Cocker Spaniel)
- L: 76–91 cm — large dogs (Labrador, Border Collie)
- XL: 91–107 cm — very large dogs (German Shepherd, Rottweiler)
- XXL: 107–122 cm — giant breeds (Great Dane, Saint Bernard)
Airline cabin vs hold:
- Cabin (in-cabin): Pet + carrier must fit under the seat (usually max 43 × 23 × 27 cm, combined weight ~8 kg)
- Hold (checked): IATA hard-shell crate required, no fabric carriers
For car travel: A crate 10–15 cm larger than the IATA minimum gives your pet more comfort on long drives.
