Rabbit Hutch Size Calculator

Calculate the minimum hutch or cage size for your rabbit based on breed size, number of rabbits, and housing type.

Recommended Hutch Size

Rabbit Hutch Sizing is based on veterinary guidelines that ensure rabbits have enough space to move, stretch, hop, and stand on their hind legs comfortably.

The General Rule: The minimum hutch size should be at least 4 times the rabbit’s full body length when stretched out. The rabbit should be able to take at least 3 hops in one direction and stand fully upright on its hind legs without its ears touching the ceiling.

Minimum Space Guidelines:

  • Small breeds (under 4 lbs / 1.8 kg — e.g., Netherland Dwarf, Polish): 12 sq ft (1.1 sq m) minimum, 24 inches (61 cm) tall
  • Medium breeds (4 to 8 lbs / 1.8 to 3.6 kg — e.g., Holland Lop, Mini Rex): 16 sq ft (1.5 sq m) minimum, 24 inches (61 cm) tall
  • Large breeds (8 to 12 lbs / 3.6 to 5.4 kg — e.g., Rex, English Lop): 24 sq ft (2.2 sq m) minimum, 30 inches (76 cm) tall
  • Giant breeds (over 12 lbs / 5.4 kg — e.g., Flemish Giant, Continental Giant): 36 sq ft (3.3 sq m) minimum, 36 inches (91 cm) tall

Multiple Rabbits: For each additional rabbit of the same size, add approximately 50% more floor space. Two medium rabbits need at least 24 sq ft (2.2 sq m). Bonded pairs can share space, but they still need room to have personal space from each other when they want it.

Exercise Area: The hutch is just the resting area. Rabbits also need a connected exercise run or daily free-roam time. The exercise area should be at least 24 sq ft (2.2 sq m) for small breeds and 32 to 48 sq ft (3 to 4.5 sq m) for large breeds. Combined living and exercise space should total at least 40 to 60 sq ft (3.7 to 5.6 sq m) depending on breed size.

Height Matters: Rabbits need to stand fully upright on their hind legs. A Flemish Giant can reach 36 inches (91 cm) when standing, so their enclosure must be at least that tall. Shorter enclosures cause spinal problems over time.

Indoor vs Outdoor: Indoor hutches can be slightly smaller if the rabbit gets regular free-roam time in a rabbit-proofed room. Outdoor hutches should be on the larger side and include weatherproofing and predator protection.
