Golden Hour Duration

Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is low on the horizon, casting warm, soft, directional light that photographers prize above all other natural lighting conditions. Understanding how long it lasts — and how it varies — is essential for planning outdoor photography sessions.

What Makes Golden Hour Light Special?

When the sun is near the horizon, its light travels through a much thicker layer of atmosphere than at midday. This has several effects:

  1. Warm color: The atmosphere scatters blue light away, leaving the red, orange, and yellow wavelengths — giving the characteristic warm golden glow.
  2. Soft, diffused light: More atmospheric scattering also softens hard shadows compared to midday sun.
  3. Long shadows: The low angle of the sun casts long shadows that add depth and texture to landscapes and portraits.
  4. Low contrast: The dynamic range between highlights and shadows is much more manageable for cameras.

How Long Does Golden Hour Last?

Golden hour is technically defined as the period when the sun’s altitude is between 0° and 6° above the horizon. This varies dramatically by:

  • Latitude: Near the equator, the sun rises and sets nearly vertically, so golden hour lasts only 20–30 minutes. At high latitudes (50°N/S and above), the sun travels at a shallower angle, stretching golden hour to 60–90 minutes or more.
  • Season: Near the summer solstice at high latitudes, golden hour can last several hours or even the entire “day” above the Arctic Circle (Midnight Sun effect).
  • Day of year: The angle of the sun’s path changes throughout the year.

Approximate Golden Hour Duration by Latitude

Latitude Equinox Summer Solstice
0° (equator) ~25 min ~25 min
15° ~28 min ~30 min
30° ~35 min ~45 min
45° ~50 min ~80 min
60° ~75 min ~3–4 hours
70°+ ~90+ min Midnight sun / no sunset

Blue Hour

Immediately after golden hour (when the sun is 6°–12° below the horizon) is called “blue hour” — another beautiful shooting window with cool, diffused blue light ideal for cityscapes and architectural photography.
