Photo Print Size Calculator
Find the maximum print size for your photo at 300 DPI (excellent) or 150 DPI (acceptable) quality.
Supports inches and centimeters.
Photo print size and DPI (dots per inch) determine the maximum quality print size your digital image can produce. Printing beyond the optimal size results in visible pixelation or blurring that is clearly apparent in large prints.
Core relationship: Print Size (inches) = Image Dimension (pixels) ÷ Output DPI
Rearranged — resolution needed for a given print size: Required Pixels = Print Size (inches) × Output DPI
DPI standards by viewing distance:
| DPI | Use Case | Viewing Distance |
|---|---|---|
| 300 DPI | Photo prints (up to 12×18") | 12–24 inches (close) |
| 200–240 DPI | Large format (canvas, posters) | 18–36 inches |
| 150 DPI | Banners, trade show displays | 3–6 feet |
| 72–96 DPI | Screen display only (not print) | Monitor viewing |
Maximum print size from common camera resolutions:
| Megapixels | Approximate Sensor Dimensions | Max Print at 300 DPI | Max Print at 200 DPI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 12 MP | 4,000 × 3,000 px | 13.3″ × 10″ | 20″ × 15″ |
| 24 MP | 6,000 × 4,000 px | 20″ × 13.3″ | 30″ × 20″ |
| 36 MP | 7,360 × 4,912 px | 24.5″ × 16.4″ | 36.8″ × 24.6″ |
| 45 MP | 8,192 × 5,464 px | 27.3″ × 18.2″ | 41″ × 27.3″ |
| 61 MP | 9,504 × 6,336 px | 31.7″ × 21.1″ | 47.5″ × 31.7″ |
Upsampling and AI enhancement: Modern AI tools (Lightroom AI, Topaz Gigapixel, Adobe Super Resolution) can double pixel dimensions with good results, effectively quadrupling megapixel count. A 24MP image upsampled to 48MP can print at 30″ × 20″ at 300 DPI with excellent quality.
File size reference:
- 24MP JPEG (high quality): ~8–15 MB
- 24MP RAW: ~25–35 MB
- 24MP TIFF (16-bit, uncompressed): ~140 MB
Worked example: You shot a landscape with a 20MP camera. Image dimensions: 5,504 × 3,671 pixels. You want to print it for a living room wall at 24″ × 16″.
- DPI at 24-inch width: 5,504 ÷ 24 = 229 DPI
- DPI at 16-inch height: 3,671 ÷ 16 = 229 DPI
- At 229 DPI — this is between 200 and 240 DPI. For a canvas print viewed from 2+ feet: excellent quality. For a photo paper print framed and viewed closely: consider cropping to 22″ × 14.6″ to keep 250 DPI — or use AI upsampling to print at 300 DPI.
Optimal print size for this image at 300 DPI: 5,504 ÷ 300 = 18.3″ × 12.2″
