Work-Life Balance Score

Work-life balance is not about splitting time perfectly 50/50 between work and personal life. It’s about having enough time and energy for the activities and relationships that matter to you, while meeting your professional responsibilities without chronic stress or burnout.

What this assessment measures: The score is calculated across five dimensions, each scored 0–4:

  1. Working hours: How many hours per week you work (including evenings and weekends)
  2. Recovery time: Quality and quantity of rest, sleep, and genuine downtime
  3. Relationships: Time and energy available for family, friends, and social connection
  4. Personal pursuits: Time for hobbies, exercise, personal development, and enjoyment
  5. Psychological detachment: Ability to mentally switch off from work when not working

Score interpretation:

  • 0–6: Poor balance — high burnout risk. Immediate changes needed.
  • 7–10: Below average — significant imbalance in one or more areas.
  • 11–14: Moderate — some areas need attention.
  • 15–17: Good — generally balanced with minor areas to improve.
  • 18–20: Excellent — very healthy work-life integration.

Why psychological detachment matters: Research by Sabine Sonnentag and colleagues has consistently shown that the ability to mentally detach from work during off-hours is the single strongest predictor of recovery quality — more so than the actual number of hours worked. Checking work email at 10pm is more damaging than working an extra hour during the day.

Common causes of poor work-life balance:

  • Overcommitment and difficulty saying no
  • Work culture that rewards visible busyness over results
  • Lack of clear work boundaries (especially in remote work)
  • Financial stress driving excessive work
  • Technology blurring the work/home boundary

Note: This is a self-reflection tool, not a clinical assessment. If you are experiencing burnout, anxiety, or depression related to work, please consult a mental health professional.
