Pendulum Period & Frequency
Simple pendulum period depends on length and gravity:
Period (T) = 2π × √(Length / g)
Frequency (f) = 1 / T
Where g = 9.81 m/s² (acceleration due to gravity at sea level).
Unit conversions for length:
- 1 meter = 100 cm = 3.281 feet = 39.37 inches
- 1 foot = 0.3048 meters
- 1 inch = 0.0254 meters
Common pendulum lengths:
- Grandfather clock: ~0.994 m (period ≈ 2 seconds)
- Foucault pendulum (Panthéon): 67 m (period ≈ 16.4 seconds)
- 1-second pendulum: ~0.248 m (period ≈ 1 second)
Note: This formula assumes small oscillation angles (<15°). For larger angles, the period increases slightly. Air resistance and string mass are also neglected.
