Torque Calculator
Calculate torque from force and distance, or solve for any missing variable.
Enter two values to find the third.
Torque Result
Torque is a rotational force calculated as force times the perpendicular distance from the pivot point.
Torque (τ) = Force (F) × Distance (d)
Enter any two values to solve for the third:
- Know force and distance → find torque
- Know torque and distance → find required force
- Know torque and force → find required distance
Common torque values:
- Lug nuts (car): 80–100 ft-lbs
- Spark plugs: 12–18 ft-lbs
- Bicycle pedal: 30–35 ft-lbs
- Opening a jar: 1–3 ft-lbs
Unit conversions:
- 1 N·m = 0.7376 ft-lbs
- 1 ft-lb = 1.3558 N·m
- 1 N·m = 8.851 in-lbs
Practical tip: Using a longer wrench (more distance) requires less force to achieve the same torque. Double the wrench length = half the force needed.
