Soap Essential Oil Blend Calculator

Calculate essential oil amounts for cold process soap by weight, with safe usage rates and note blending guidance.

Essential Oil Blend

Essential oil usage rates in cold process soap:

Essential oils (EOs) are concentrated plant extracts. Unlike fragrance oils, EOs have maximum safe usage rates dictated by dermal sensitivity, phototoxicity, and sensitization potential. The International Fragrance Association (IFRA) sets guidelines; for rinse-off products like bar soap, rates are more generous than leave-on products.

Standard usage rates:

The total essential oil load in cold process soap is typically 3–5% of the total oil weight (not total batch weight).

Essential oil (oz) = Total oil weight (oz) × usage rate (%)

Essential Oil Max Rate (%) Note Type Flash Point
Lavender 5.0 Middle 156°F
Peppermint 5.0 Top 156°F
Tea Tree 5.0 Middle 140°F
Eucalyptus 5.0 Top 120°F
Lemon 3.0 Top 118°F (phototoxic)
Orange (sweet) 5.0 Top 115°F
Rosemary 4.0 Middle 109°F
Cedarwood 5.0 Base 185°F
Patchouli 5.0 Base 198°F
Clove bud 0.5 Middle 114°F (sensitizer)
Cinnamon bark 0.5 Base 162°F (irritant)

The perfumer’s triangle (note blending):

A well-balanced blend uses top, middle, and base notes:

  • Top notes (30%): First scent detected, evaporates fastest (citrus, mint, eucalyptus)
  • Middle notes (50%): The body of the blend, emerges as top fades (lavender, rosemary, tea tree)
  • Base notes (20%): Longest lasting, anchors the blend (cedarwood, patchouli, vanilla)

Worked example:

A soap recipe with 32 oz total oils, using 4% essential oil load:

  • Total EO = 32 × 0.04 = 1.28 oz (36.3 grams)
  • Top note (30%): 1.28 × 0.30 = 0.38 oz sweet orange
  • Middle note (50%): 1.28 × 0.50 = 0.64 oz lavender
  • Base note (20%): 1.28 × 0.20 = 0.26 oz cedarwood

Conversion: 1 oz = 28.35 grams. Most droppers dispense ~0.05 mL per drop, so 1 oz ≈ 600 drops.

Important safety notes:

  • Always check IFRA maximums for each oil — some (clove, cinnamon, wintergreen) are restricted to under 1%.
  • Phototoxic oils (cold-pressed citrus) can cause skin burns in sunlight. In soap, this is less of a concern since soap rinses off.
  • Add EOs at thin trace and stir gently — high temperatures destroy volatile compounds.
