Handicap Index

What Is the World Handicap System? The World Handicap System (WHS) was introduced in January 2020 as a unified global golf handicapping system. It replaced six different regional systems (USGA, CONGU, EGA, Golf Australia, SAGA, ARCCOS) with one universal standard. The WHS is administered jointly by the R&A and the USGA and is used in over 100 countries. It allows golfers from any country to compete fairly against each other anywhere in the world.

Score Differential For each round, a Score Differential is calculated: Score Differential = (Adjusted Gross Score − Course Rating) × 113 / Slope Rating Where: Adjusted Gross Score = actual score with maximum hole limits applied (net double bogey for WHS). Course Rating = the expected score for a scratch golfer on a specific tee (e.g., 71.2). Slope Rating = a number from 55 to 155 (neutral = 113) representing the relative difficulty for bogey vs scratch golfers. 113 is the standard slope rating — it normalizes all differentials to the same baseline.

Handicap Index Calculation The WHS uses your best 8 differentials from your most recent 20 rounds. Handicap Index = average of best 8 differentials × 0.96 (the “playing conditions” reduction) The 0.96 factor is called the “bonus for excellence” — it rewards better players slightly.

Course Handicap To convert your Handicap Index for a specific course: Course Handicap = Handicap Index × (Slope Rating / 113) + (Course Rating − Par) This tells you how many strokes you get on a specific course from a specific tee.

Playing Handicap For stroke play, the playing handicap may be adjusted by a Competition Allowance (typically 95% for stroke play). Playing Handicap = Course Handicap × allowance

Maximum Hole Score Under WHS, each hole score is capped at Net Double Bogey: Net Double Bogey = Par + 2 + any handicap strokes received on that hole. This prevents one bad hole from distorting the handicap.

Soft Cap and Hard Cap The WHS includes caps to prevent rapid handicap increases: Soft Cap: if handicap tries to increase more than 3.0 above the low point, only 50% of the increase applies. Hard Cap: the handicap cannot exceed the low point + 5.0 strokes. These prevent sandbagging and maintain competitive integrity.

Maximum Handicap Index Maximum allowed Handicap Index: 54.0 for both men and women under WHS. This replaced the old 36 (men) / 40 (women) limits — more inclusive for beginners and high-handicappers.

Scratch and Plus Handicaps Scratch golfer: Handicap Index of 0.0 — expected to match Course Rating. Plus handicap: a positive-value handicap gives strokes to others (e.g., +2.4 means you subtract strokes). Professionals typically play at +4 to +8 level, though they don’t use the official handicap system.
