Running Pace Calculator
Calculate running pace per km or mile from distance and time.
Predict finish time for any pace and distance, with splits for 5K, 10K, and marathon.
Running pace describes how long it takes to cover a set distance — typically expressed as minutes per kilometer or minutes per mile. It is the inverse of speed.
Pace from time and distance: Pace (min/km) = Total Time (minutes) ÷ Distance (km) Pace (min/mile) = Total Time (minutes) ÷ Distance (miles)
Speed from pace: Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ Pace (min/km)
Finishing time from pace: Finish Time = Pace × Distance
Worked example: A runner finishes a 10 km race in 52 minutes. Pace = 52 ÷ 10 = 5:12 per km (5 minutes 12 seconds per km) Speed = 60 ÷ 5.2 = 11.5 km/h
Predicting a half marathon (21.1 km) at the same pace: Finish Time = 5.2 × 21.1 = 109.7 minutes = 1:49:44
Common race distances:
| Race | Distance |
|---|---|
| 5K | 5 km / 3.1 miles |
| 10K | 10 km / 6.2 miles |
| Half marathon | 21.1 km / 13.1 miles |
| Marathon | 42.2 km / 26.2 miles |
Pace benchmarks (min/km):
- Beginner runner: 7:00–9:00/km
- Recreational: 5:30–7:00/km
- Fitness runner: 4:30–5:30/km
- Club competitive: 3:45–4:30/km
- Elite amateur: 3:00–3:45/km
- World-class marathon: ~2:50/km
Negative splitting: Running the second half of a race faster than the first is called a negative split and is considered the most efficient race strategy for distances of 10K and longer.
