Surfboard Volume Calculator
Find your ideal surfboard volume in litres based on your weight, skill level, and wave type.
Get the right float for your surfing.
Surfboard volume (measured in litres) determines how much float and paddle power a board provides. Too little volume and you will struggle to catch waves and tire quickly. Too much and the board becomes hard to manoeuvre and feels unstable under the feet.
The general formula used by most shapers as a starting point is: Volume (L) = Body weight (kg) × multiplier
The multiplier varies by skill level:
- Beginner: 0.55–0.65 (high volume for stability and easy paddling)
- Intermediate: 0.40–0.50 (balance of paddle and performance)
- Advanced: 0.30–0.38 (low volume for quick rail-to-rail transitions)
- Pro / high performance: 0.26–0.32 (minimal float, maximum feel)
Wave type adjustments:
- Small, weak waves (beach break, mush): add 2–4 litres above baseline
- Hollow, powerful waves (reef, point break): subtract 1–2 litres
- Cold water surfing: add 1 litre (wetsuit restricts paddle movement)
Fitness and age: Less-fit surfers and those over 50 benefit from 10–15% more volume than the formula suggests. More volume = more paddle power = more waves caught = more fun.
Example: A 75 kg intermediate surfer in average conditions: Volume = 75 × 0.45 = 33.75 litres. A board in the 32–36L range would suit well.
Most modern shortboards range from 25–38L. Fish boards: 35–50L. Funboards: 45–65L. Longboards: 65–90L+. Foam beginner boards: 70–100L+.
