Tattoo Healing Stages
Tattoo healing happens in four overlapping phases. Total time to a fully settled tattoo is 4-6 weeks for most adults, with the visible “scab and itch” phase ending around days 14-21.
Stage 1: Inflammation (Days 1-3)
- Redness, swelling, oozing of plasma and ink
- Mild burning, throbbing
- Keep wrapped or use second-skin film as instructed
- Wash gently 2-3× daily with fragrance-free soap
Stage 2: Scabbing (Days 3-10)
- Thin scabs form, surface looks dull and cloudy
- Mild to moderate itching begins
- DO NOT pick or scratch — pulled scabs remove ink
- Apply unscented lotion in thin layers, 2-4× daily
Stage 3: Peeling and itching (Days 10-21)
- Dry, flaky skin peels off in small flakes
- Heaviest itching phase
- Tattoo may look faded — this is the top dead layer, color is fine underneath
- Continue moisturizing, avoid sun and soaking
Stage 4: Settling (Days 21-42)
- Outer skin fully healed, deeper dermis still settling
- Color brightens as the dead epidermal layer fully sheds
- No more peeling or oozing
- Sunscreen now mandatory (SPF 30+) to prevent fading
Adjustments by skin type and placement:
- Sensitive / dry skin: +20-30% healing time
- Oily skin: -10% healing time
- Hands / feet: +30-50% (constant friction, hard to keep clean)
- Joints (elbow, knee): +20% (movement reopens scabs)
- Ribs / sternum: +15% (sweat, clothing friction)
Warning signs (consult a doctor):
- Spreading redness 5+ days after the appointment
- Pus, fever, or hot-to-touch swelling
- Severe pain that worsens after day 3
